FUTIAN (district of Shenzhen); FAITH & RESPONSIBILITY:

There are several established ways that many nation-states seek to enrich the image and experience of their gateway cities. Metropolitan centres such as London, Seoul, Tokyo and Paris all present international sporting events combined with cultural performances, presentations and exhibitions as effective means to profile and promote a city's image. As Shenzhen matures at super speed into a unique and vibrant city, municipal authorities are exercising newly found twenty-first century vigour by hosting international cultural exchanges and events that highlight this city’s unique and ever changing qualities.

International photography exchange activities, such as this exhibition, “Faith and Responsibility” are an important way to promote high profile and invaluable exchanges between China and the global community. During 2013, photographers from Australia, Dr Dave Cubby, Peter Steele and Phillip Spasich were invited by the Shenzhen government and supported by Newepoch Cultural and Media Group to undertake an intense session of creative photography through the Futian district of Shenzhen in collaboration with Chinese photographers, David Lai, Yanrong Quan,Yilin Li, Dongsheng Xiao, Jianwei Xie . These photgraphers took the imaginative perspective of documenting the everyday humanity and realities of daily life for the citizens living within this changing metropolitan precinct, which is experiencing a time of grand modernization. These images expound China’s achievements from its economic reforms, as well as giving the world an enriched understanding of the vicissitudes of contemporary Chinese culture.

This project was a cultural exchange between Australian and Chinese photographers and features the work of the following:

Dave Cubby, Peter Steele, *David Lai, Phillip Spasich, *Yanrong QUAN, * Yilin LI, * Dongsheng XIAO, * Jianwei XIE
