DIVERSITY IS A WONDERFUL THING........
An exhibition of artwork from the students of Canterbury Boys’ High School.
The Visual Arts program at Canterbury Boys contributes to the broad educational experiences at the school. Engaging in the Visual Arts, enables the students to create their own artwork, study the work of a wide range of artists and view artworks in real-world context. Studying Visual Arts allows our students to experience art in a number of contexts and see the creative possibilities that are available to them beyond school. Creativity is viewed as a tool to be used in many career paths of the 21st Century.
This exhibition showcases the wide-ranging interests, ideas and personalities of the boys at Canterbury Boys. Through their artwork they have given us a glimpse into both their private and public worlds; each work revealing something about their place at school and how they view the world beyond school. Each work reflects the individuality and diversity of the students taught at Canterbury Boys.
Last year’s Year 12 group were encouraged to “say” something about themselves through their artwork. Andrew Ro expressed his fascination with the dream world through Dali-inspired photographs; a glimpse into a student’s more private world.
Year 11 have explored the theme of portraiture in a painting, using techniques they have learnt in previous years. The portraits reveal an insight into their thoughts, preoccupations and diverse interests.
Year 10 students were able to bring the age-old theme of the Still-Life to a brighter life, rendering their work using very vibrant colour schemes.
The Year 9 students created wonderful manipulated images of the Landscape, gaining inspiration from artists such as Turner, Monet, Van Gogh and Lorrain.
Year 7 students have also explored the theme of portraiture in their artwork, revealing an insight into their private and very diverse worlds. The boys viewed and were inspired by work from a wide range of artists such as Frida Kahlo, William Dobell and the most current Archibald Prize winner Kathryn Del Barton.
Essentially, through the students’ individuality and diversity and with the knowledge attained through the study of other artists, the boys have made sense of their place in the world around them....in their own unique ways.
