Bankstown Campus 35 Years Commemorative Exhibition
Once known as Milperra College of Advanced Education (MCAE), UWS Bankstown is now one of six University campuses stretching across Greater Western Sydney.
Dating back to 1974, MCAE was the first college to offer specialised teacher and social work education in South-western Sydney. The former college is now home to UWS' Schools of Education, Humanities & Languages, Psychology and Social Sciences.
The first students enrolled at Milperra College of Advanced Education in 1975, in the School of Teacher Education. Lectures were held in temporary classrooms as the new ones were being built - they opened in February 1976 with the exception of the student cafeteria, which was completed in 1977.
On July 16 1976, MCAE was proclaimed a Corporate College of Advanced Education, and the first Council took office, with Dr Joyce Wylie as Chair.
The School of Social Work commenced teaching in 1977, and by 1978 the School of Liberal and Scientific Studies had opened.
This exhibition explores the rich, vibrant and personal history of the Bankstown Campus and its role in the areas of Education, Social Work and Visual Arts.
This exhibition has been an opportunity to gather photographic records and memorabilia from various sources and as a result a number of items have been donated to the UWS Archives, including an original Milperra College of Advanced Education flag and sports jacket, as well as copies of original student publications and theatre productions.
Visitors to the exhibition will gain an appreciation for the rich history of Bankstown campus and reflect on the achievements and contribution the campus has made through its various incarnations these past 35 years.
